Truth About Guns Mentioned in Latest JPFO Alert

without comments

First if you came here via the link in the Jews for the Preservation of Firearm Ownership e-mail alert note that this isn’t the site with the article you’re looking for. But I do urge you to give my podcast a listen if you’re interested in arguments to use against the anti-gunners. This podcast, like many other pro-rights podcasts is a member of the Gun Rights Radio Network. Also I’m going to drop a mention of my blog called A Geek with Guns which is also gun related.

OK shameless plugs are over (Hey I’m going to use all this additional traffic for some good) for everybody else it appears as though my podcast has hit the big time. I’ve been mentioned in the latest Jews for the Preservation of Firearm Ownership e-mail alert. Of course the mention was entirely inadvertent. Here is an exert from the alert:

ALERT FROM JEWS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF FIREARMS OWNERSHIP
America’s Aggressive Civil Rights Organization

JPFO ALERT: LAMPOON A LEFTIST

We recently received an article from -The truthaboutguns.com -
http://thetruthaboutguns.com/2010/03/robert-farago/jewish-gun-ownership-up/

It takes to task a sloppy and incomplete article by a leftist
Israeli newspaper about gun ownership.

Share it with an anti-gunner this weekend. You will be glad you
did.

So an accidental space between “The” and “truthaboutguns.com” nabbed me some free publicity. And I did check to ensure I had my domain before the other site and it appears as though The Truth About Guns started in February of 2010 while I started in 2009 so I have precedence. Does that matter at all? Not in the slightest to me but it’s always nice to be in a position where I don’t have to worry about changing my URL due to possible legal issues.

Either way I just thought that this was funny and I’d share it.

Minnesota Mayors Against Illegal Guns

without comments

Sorry it’s been so dead on this site recently but life has been hectic. I won’t both you with the details but I will bring to light a project I’ve been working on. We all know the organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a deceptively named organization that is actually Mayor Bloomberg’s personal crusade to disarm the American populace. Of course this organization is also fairly secretive with little information given publicly.

Thankfully there are laws similar to the federal Freedom of Information Act in every state. Since I live in Minnesota I decided to use our law to extract as much information about the organization as I can from Minnesota mayors whom are members. There are five Minnesota mayors in the coalition:

Mayor Steve Lampi of Brooklyn Park
Mayor Elizabeth B. Kautz of Burnsville
Mayor Don Ness of Duluth
Mayor R.T. Rybak of Minneapolis
Mayor Chris Coleman of St. Paul

I have sent requests to each of these mayors and am planning on posting all retrieved data on this site as well as my blog. There are two main goals to this project. Goal one is simply to find what information the coalition is sending to its members. The second goal is a little more complex.

We know many mayors don’t know the actual purpose behind Mayors Against Illegal Guns. This is known because may mayors have left once it was made apparent that the coalition isn’t against illegal guns alone, but guns in general. This lead me to believe the correspondences being sent to members are as carefully worded as information that is publicly released. If this is so this information could help us better fight Bloomberg’s little posse.

Periodically I’ll post information retrieved. Everything I receive will be posted regardless of perceived value or redundancy with information previously posted. I urge every gun owner to take similar actions in their state of residence.

Episode 10 Delayed

with one comment

Two episodes in a row delayed. Not good. But alas I have to do it however much it pains me. The reasoning is due to some stuff going on in my personal life and the fact the place that employs me is moving from one building to another and won’t be completed until the 25th. I hope to get an episode out before all this but I sadly can not guarantee it.

Anyways I apologize for this and will get the episode out as soon as humanly possible.

Episode 9 Will Be Delayed

with one comment

Hey everybody. Although I hate to do it I must delay episode 9. Why? Well a reason is most certainly something I must provide.

I live in an apartment complex and my new neighbor has a fancy new boom boom system he is apparently very proud of. You can hear the music in my apartment it’s so good in fact. Noise violations don’t start until 10 p.m. here hence I can’t do anything, nor am I able to figured out exactly which apartment the bass is coming from. When I do I’ll ask him to turn it down.

Why does this matter? Well because my microphone keeps picking up his bass lines. I’m trying to figure out how to filter them out in GarageBand. Since I’m not overly good with the program and time has been in short supply I haven’t figured out the setting yet. Expect the episode later this week.

Sorry for the delay.

Lesson Learned

without comments

For those of you who have listened to the first episode let me start of by saying you’re awesome (seriously). But I’m sure you noticed a slightly echoey sound. That was due to the fact I used the built in microphone on my MacBook Pro to record the podcast.

The reason I did that was simply due to the fact I wanted to record an episode and get it out the door as a trail run to ensure I actually wanted to do this. Nothing sucks more than a podcast that lasts a single episode and stops out of the blue. Since I decided to keep doing this podcasting thing I decided to invest in better audio equipment. I’m going to be totally honest, I don’t know crap about audio recording and mixing. I know enough to click the record button in GarageBand, record the podcast, and made some simple edits (mostly cutting out dead space in the podcast).

And I blame my lack of knowledge for what I did next. I decided to pick up one of those headsets with a built in microphone. Needless to say the audio quality sucked. I wasn’t ready for how much it was going to suck though. See I didn’t expect a constant static buzzing sound coming across the line during the recording. By during down the pickup volume in the System Preference panel I was able to get the buzzing sound down quite a bit but it was still there. Finally I’ve come to the conclusion the headset isn’t going to work and have decided to forget it.

I did promise better audio quality for the next episode on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum though and by God I do everything in my power to deliver on my promises. I looked around and asked some people who actually know something about recording sound what a good microphone would be that wouldn’t break the bank and would be simple to use for a neanderthal such as myself.

I was pointed towards the Blue Snowball microphone. It’s a USB microphone that apparently has good sound quality and doesn’t require a lot of working to get that sound quality. I bought it via Amazon and did a two day shipping option in the hopes of getting it soon enough to record the podcast and get it out by Sunday.

I just want to drop a note that Amazon has these bad boys going for about $65.00 whereas everybody else is selling them for $99.00. That’s one Hell of a discount.

Using Episode Tags

without comments

OK a new “feature” has been added. In actuality I’m using a built in feature of WordPress to accomplish something I hope will be useful. Each episode post will now contain tags. These tags each list arguments made in the dissected article.

For instance if the article makes the claim the second amendment meant only the militia should have guns the tag “The Militia Argument” will be added to the post. This should make it easier if you are looking for information regarding specific anti-gun arguments.

Let’s say you want to find a counter argument to the anti-gunner claim that says we don’t need guns because the police will protect us. Any episode with the tag “The Government will Protect You” will counter claims to that argument.

Hopefully that helps people find what they need when this podcast gets more episode.

Release Schedule

without comments

OK I just thought I’d post a note about the release schedule for this podcast. Truth About Guns is going to be a bi-weekly podcast. This is due to the fact it takes quite a bit of work pulling all the research material together and combing through it. In actuality I’m finding recording and editing doesn’t take nearly as much time as writing the script and gathering the research information.

I’ll probably release episodes every other Sunday evening. The next episode should be posted on October 10 if I’m looking at this calendar right.

How Episode Posts will Work

without comments

OK each episode will have accompanying information with it. First and foremost will be a link to the article under criticism and the sources I used. Now being this is the Internet and nothing seems to exist forever I will also provide local copies of any sources I am able to (if I source a book I’ll provide an ISBN so you can look it up at the local library if nothing else).

So each episode post will contain a link to the web page I obtained it from. Following that link there will be a file type in square brackets which is the server stored copy. For instance if the file is listed as [PDF] it will be a Adobe PDF file. If the file is listed as [PDF/ZIP] it is a zip file containing multiple PDF files. If a source is a web page I will save it using Firefox and dump it into a .zip file. It will be listed as [HTML/ZIP] for the file type.

Likewise if I have to reference a audio file of a speech or something it will be placed in a ZIP file so the podcast RSS feed doesn’t get mucked up. Further more a direct link to each episode will also be provided although subscribing to the RSS feed will most likely be the best option of getting episodes.

The URL for each episode will be in the form http://truthaboutguns.com/podcast/episode-#/ where # is the number of the episode. So if you’re listening to episode 1 the URL will be http://truthaboutguns.com/podcast/episode-1/.

Welcome

without comments

Welcome to the home page of the Truth About Guns podcast. The podcast will be launching soon but before it does I want to give an overview of this upcoming podcast.

Simply put the anti-gun crowd such as the Violence Policy Center and the Brady Campaign like to use half-truth, hysteria, and flat out lies to gather people behind their cause. Those of us in the pro-rights crowd realize this and often show where they are lying. That is what this podcast does.

Each episode I will present an anti-gun article. Be it opinion columns, “research” papers, anti-gun bulletins, videos, etc. it will be presented. During the presentation of these articles I will point out the fallacies by citing proof against their lies. I will do my absolute best to ensure everything I cite is from neutral sources and it of research paper quality. There are times where I will have to use news articles and other such sources in the process of pointing out the fallacies though.

This is the way to win against the anti-gunners, cold hard facts. This podcast will do exactly that.
